Chiropractic benefits during pregnancy
Many women seek chiropractic care to relieve neck or back pain that can result from weight gain and altered biomechanics during pregnancy. But even if you’re not in pain, you can benefit from visiting a chiropractor. Chiropractic care during pregnancy maintains, and can even improve, balance and alignment in your spine and pelvis. This can help your baby assume her optimal birthing position and reduce the risk of having a breech baby.
Regular chiropractic care can also provide a more comfortable pregnancy and delivery for both mother and baby. It stimulates the nervous system to enable proper functioning of your reproductive organs, thus supporting the needs of your baby throughout pregnancy and during delivery.
Why should I have chiropractic care during pregnancy?
During pregnancy, there are several physiological and endocrinological changes that occur in preparation for creating the environment for the developing baby. The following changes could result in a misaligned spine or joint:
• Protruding abdomen and increased back curve
• Pelvis changes
• Uterus enlarges and expands forward
• Posture changes
Establishing balance and alignment with the pelvis is another reason to obtain chiropractic care during pregnancy. When the pelvis is misaligned it may reduce the amount of room available for the developing baby. A misaligned pelvis may also make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible position for delivery.
The nervous system is the communication system to the reproductive cycle along with all the other parts of the body. Keeping the spine aligned helps the entire body work more effectively.
Potential benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy include:
• Maintaining the pregnancy
• Controlling vomiting
• Increased likelihood of full-term delivery
• Reduction in the time of labor and delivery
• Relief of back, neck or joint pain
• Prevent a potential cesarean section or vaginal breech delivery

~ AUGUST~

PATIENT NEWSLETTER

Dear Patient,

It’s hot outside. At least it is to me. I was thinking about what I was going to write about today in this newsletter, and finally, after some sleepless nights, I finally came up with this winning thought. How about telling you how to celebrate August, all month long with a few of the offbeat holidays. Here’s a friendly list I’ve come up with:

August 1: Girlfriend's Day. ...

August 2: National Mustard Day. ...

August 3: Sisters Day. ...

August 4: Single Working Women's Day. ...

August 5: National Underwear Day. ...

August 8: Happiness Happens Day. ...

August 9: Veep Day. ...

August 12: Vinyl Record Day.

Gluten-Free Caramelized Pineapple Upside-Down Cake

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 cup unsalted butter, divided

1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise

6 (1/2-inch-thick) slices fresh pineapple

1/4 cup dark rum

Cooking spray

5 ounces gluten-free multipurpose flour (such as King Arthur Flour; about 1 cup)

1/4 cup almond flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 cup light sour cream

2 tablespoons canola oil

2/3 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

Preparation

1. Preheat oven to 350°.

2. Combine brown sugar, 2 tablespoons butter, and vanilla bean in a large skillet over medium heat; cook 6 minutes or until butter melts and sugar dissolves, stirring frequently.

3. Next Add pineapple in a single layer. Carefully pour rum over pineapple; tilt pan to ignite.

Simmer 5 minutes on each side or until slightly tender and caramelized. Remove vanilla bean.

4. Coat a 9-inch cake pan with cooking spray. Arrange pineapple in a single layer in bottom of pan; pour sugar mixture over pineapple, tilting pan to coat bottom evenly.

5. Weigh or lightly spoon multipurpose flour into a dry measuring cup; level with a knife. Combine multipurpose flour, almond flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda; stir with a whisk. Melt remaining 2 tablespoons butter in a microwave-safe dish at HIGH for 35 seconds. Place melted butter, sour cream, and oil in a bowl, stirring well with a whisk.

6. Place granulated sugar and eggs in a large bowl; beat with a mixer at high speed 5 minutes or until fluffy. Reduce speed to medium. Add flour mixture and sour cream mixture alternately to egg mixture, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Spoon batter over pineapple, spreading it evenly.

7. Bake at 350° for 38 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan 15 minutes on a wire rack. Loosen cake from edges of pan with a knife; invert onto a plate.

Now for your monthly:

1. Origin of August’s name: Named after Julius Caesar Augustus.

The Story of Chiropractic

II

magine this. The year was 1895, the same year that x-rays were discovered. You probably didn’t know that, but now you do. At that particular time, our health care was provided by a diversity of unregulated professions, including osteopaths, magnetic healers and “medical” doctors. Back in the day, most medical education consisted of working as an “apprentice” for a “medical” doctor, and learning the craft by observation. Kind of like doing a residency now, I guess. Anyway, here’s the rest of the story.
D.D. Palmer, the Father of Chiropractic, was a “magnetic healer,” with a practice in Davenport, Iowa. He had doubts about the “germ theory” as the complete explanation for the cause of all disease. After all, if germs kill... shouldn't we all be dead? He asked anyone that didn’t believe him: “How was it that 2 brothers could work in the same shop, eat the same food, sleep in the same bed, and that one would succumb to a BAD disease while the other one would stay healthy and never get sick?”

His answer was that it was not just the “seed” (or germ) which was the cause of people’s dis-eases.He thought that the "soil" or the recuperative power of the body (which he later referred to as “innate intelligence”, and we now call homeostasis) was the missing component of the equation.

One day D.D. was in his office and he was talking with Harvey Lillard, the janitor guy in his building. Unfortunately, Harvey was deaf and had been for years. He mentioned to D.D., that years ago he was lifting a heavy weight, and he felt something “snap” at the base of his neck. It was several weeks later, but his hearing started to fade.
D.D. was intrigued, and asked Harvey if he could examine his back. Harvey said, “Okay, no problem.” What D.D. “felt” (doctors of chiropractic refer to this art as “palpation”) was that one of the upper back bones was sticking out much more than the one above or below it. He explained to Harvey that he felt that this “bone out of place” could be causing pressure on his spinal cord, and that this could be the reason that Harvey was now deaf.

He convinced Harvey to lie down on the couch, (he did not have a chiropractic table) and placed his hands on the transverse processes of the bone and, as D.D. explained in his books, “wracked it back into position”. When Harvey got up, he stated that he could hear a horse drawn cart down in the street! This was the first thing he had heard clearly in 17 years!
Although DD thought he had found (one of) the causes for deafness, what he found over time was that when he corrected mis-alignments in Harvey’s spine (what he termed a “subluxation”), where ever they happened to be, it improved the nerve supply, thus the function, of whatever tissues and organs that particular nerve(s) supplied.

What I do here at the office is remove the impediment or blockage to the brain's control of the body. We call that impingement to the nerves a “spinal subluxation”. Don’t forget to make sure that you’re checked regularly because things do happen without any pain in your spine, and you’re the only one that can help yourself, so make sure you call now.

~ THREE Ways to Stay Healthy ~

Here are 3 healthy behaviors that can go a long way toward improving your health and lowering your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and osteoporosis. And they’re not as complicated as you might think. Choose one behavior below to start with. Once you’ve got that one down, move on to the others. I have more, but three is a good starting point.

1. Maintain a Healthy Weight

Keeping your weight in check is often easier said than done, but a few simple tips can help. First off, if you’re overweight, focus initially on not gaining any more weight. This by itself can improve your health. Then, when you’re ready, try to take off some extra pounds for an even greater health boost, call me at the office.

Tips

  • Integrate physical activity and movement into your life.
  • Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
  • Choose smaller portions and eat more slowly.
  • Limit children’s TV and computer time.
  • Encourage healthy snacking on fruits and vegetables.
  • Encourage activity during free time.

2. Exercise & Get Adjusted Regularly

Few things are as good for you as regular physical activity and adjustments. While it can be hard to find the time, it’s important to fit in at least 30 minutes of activity every day. More is even better, but any amount is better than none. Make sure you make your appointments here at the office as well.

Tips

  • Choose activities you enjoy. Many things count as exercise, including walking, gardening and dancing.
  • Make exercise a habit by setting aside the same time for it each day. Try going to the gym at lunchtime or taking a walk regularly after dinner.
  • Stay motivated by exercising with someone.

3. Don’t Smoke

You’ve heard it before: If you smoke, quitting is absolutely the best thing you can do for your health. Yes, it’s hard, but it’s also far from impossible. More than 1,000 Americans stop SMOKING… for good… every day. If you smoke you can do it too.

Tips

  • Keep trying! It often takes six or seven tries before you quit for good.
  • Talk to a health-care provider for help. We think our services should be at the top of your list of health care providers.
  • Join a quit-smoking program. Your workplace or health plan may offer one.
  • Try to quit as soon as possible. If you smoke, your children will be more likely to smoke.
  • Don't smoke in the house or car. If kids breathe in your smoke, they may have a higher risk of breathing problems and lung cancer.
  • When appropriate, talk to your kids about the dangers of smoking and chewing tobacco. A health-care professional or school counselor can help.

Migraine Headaches
Do you have migraines?

Do you want to do something about them?

First off you have to know what they are, and be sure that’s what kind of headaches you’re having.

Here’s the deal. Migraines are extremely painful, recurring headaches that are sometimes accompanied by other symptoms, such as visual disturbances, for example, seeing an aura or nausea.

There are 2 types of migraine -- migraine with aura, formerly called common migraines, and migraine without aura, formerly called classic migraines.

If you have a migraine with an aura, you may see things, such as stars, or zigzag lines, or have a temporary blind spot about 30 minutes before the headache starts.

Even if you don't experience an aura, you may have other warning signs in the period before the headaches starts, such as a craving for sweets, thirst, sleepiness, or depression.

Although there is no cure for migraines, you can manage the condition by reducing the frequency of attacks and reducing pain once an attack starts by making sure that your neck and central nervous system are checked at this office. If you know anyone that has migraines and needs help, please do not hesitate to tell them about this handout. Thank you.

HANDOUT 207 9 15 20VeteransVeterans, Drugs, & Accidental Death
(NewsUSA) - For years, the military has worried that an over-reliance on prescription “painkillers” was putting both veterans and active-duty troops at risk of addiction, serious adverse reactions to the drugs, and accidental death.
The problem was found to be greatest among veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan -- particularly those with post-traumatic stress disorder -- who, according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, may have been given "inappropriate prescriptions" for opioids in a misguided attempt to quickly relieve their suffering.
Finally, change appears to be coming as the military expands its use of alternative treatments like chiropractic care.
In fact, Dr. Robert D. Kerns, the national program director for pain management at the Department of Veterans Affairs, told the New York Times that the study "encourages" his department as well as the Pentagon's health system, "to build on our existing initiatives."
That would be welcome news to Congressional committees following up on last year's Veterans Health Administration scandal.
"We have said for a long time that sending a veteran out of the door with a bagful of pills is not a solution," Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., said in investigating allegations that a Tomah, Wisconsin, Veterans Affairs hospital was prescribing "excessive dosages of opiates."
As more research pours in, chiropractic care continues to gain supporters. A 2013 study published in the journal "Spine," for example, found that 73 percent of participating active-duty military patients with acute low back pain receiving a combination of chiropractic manipulative treatment and standard medical care rated their global improvement as "pain completely gone," "much better" or "moderately better."
Just 17 percent in the same study who received only standard care said likewise. If you know a veteran or just your next door neighbor that needs a chiropractor, please do not hesitate to give them this handout. We’ll be more than happy to talk with them to find out if they qualify to have chiropractic care.

HANDOUT 207 16 15 20Drink 20More 20WaterYour kids probably aren't drinking enough of this
There's one simple liquid that has a huge effect on how well your family feels today: water.
Yes, good old water. More than half of children and teenagers in the United States might NOT be properly hydrated, but even if they’re drinking water, they’re still not getting the good stuff. In fact, 54.5% of the students in the study had urine concentrations that qualified them as below their minimum daily water intake.
I am surprised that almost one in four kids drank no water during the course of their day according to the latest research. And get this. Not all children and adolescents were equally dehydrated, according to the study. Boys surveyed were 76% more likely to be inadequately hydrated than girls, which was a statistically significant finding.
While mild dehydration typically isn't life threatening, not drinking enough water could result in some things you might think are wrong with your children. Things like cognitive impairment, headaches and even nausea in severe cases.
For younger children who are not hydrated, symptoms include: fussiness, infrequent urination, dry mouth and a lack of tears when the child is crying. Keeping kids hydrated can help them with learning and to perform better in school.
So how much water is enough? For kids and teenagers, daily water requirements vary quite a bit and depend on several factors, including age and activity level.
*For total water intake, experts recommend that kids get the majority from drinking water, but also a small amount from food. Kids 1 to 3 years old need roughly four cups of drinking water daily. For kids 4 to 8, five cups is recommended a day. Once kids reach 9, the requirements differ by sex. For boys 9 to 13, eight cups of water is recommended daily, while girls need about seven cups.
"Children don't have a highly developed thirst mechanism, so they're especially vulnerable to becoming dehydrated."
When you think about losing water from the body, urination typically comes to mind. But breathing, sweating and your skin are all other paths that water can take to exit the body. In fact, YOU lose nearly 4 cups of water a day through the skin and normal breathing. That's why it's important to regularly rehydrate your body, which are roughly 60% water by mass depending on age and body composition. The best type of water, and the cleanest is pH water. (ask me about this if you don’t drink it currently.)
Your kids should steer clear of caffeinated and sugary beverages because they contain other ingredients that don't provide nutritional benefits. Even worse, beverages with caffeine are mildly diuretic, meaning they cause the body to produce more urine. This means that caffeine could even make dehydration worse.
Some schools built before the 1980s may have contaminated drinking water because of lead water pipes. For these communities, purified water from outside sources or bottled water are possible alternatives, but again, if you can give your children pH water, you’re way ahead of the game.
Schools need to do a better job of providing kids access to clean drinking water, and not just during lunch time and if it were up to me, they’d have a pH water system instead of what they now have. Some schools have already taken steps in the right direction by providing water in attractive pitchers, refillable water bottles and easy-to-use fill stations.
At home, parents can start by setting by a good example: drinking primarily plain pH water to create a "culture of hydration. Children shouldn't even have to ask for water," and younger children in child care should have pH water, or at least some clean drinking water available to them at all times.

PATIENT NEWSLETTER

Dear Patient,

Well time is moving along. It’s already May, and here’s what I know. Life bestows changes on us all: a new baby, a teenager who is growing up, a midlife crisis for someone we know, a person we know with dementia, someone we find out has a terminal illness, etc.
During my years in practice, I've found that a well-written book can ease the concerns of an expectant mother or offer words of wisdom to a family devastated by the unexpected.
Recommending books and reading those that my patients have suggested has not only provided balance in my life, and my practice, but also has provided me with common ground on which to talk about life's experiences with you as a patient.
The books I exchange with patients in my practice sometimes tend to fall into three basic categories: business books, books that tell stories that I can relate to, and consciousness raisers. If you have a good book you’ve read, let me know about it. I’m always open to reading anything that helps me grow mentally.

Your Health is your Most Important ASSET
TAKE IT SERIOUSLY!!!!

The HUMAN BODY is an incredibly complex and intricate system, one that still baffles doctors and researchers on a regular basis despite thousands of years of medical knowledge. As a result, it shouldn’t be any surprise that even body parts and functions we deal with every day have bizarre or unexpected facts and explanations behind them. From sneezes to fingernail growth, here are a few weird, wacky, and interesting facts about the human body.
The HUMAN BRAIN is the most complex and least understood part of the HUMAN ANATOMY. There may be a lot we don’t know, but here are a few interesting facts that we’ve got covered.
1. Nerve impulses to and from the brain travel as fast as 170 miles per hour. Ever wonder how you can react so fast to things around you or why that stubbed toe hurts right away? It’s due to the super-speedy movement of nerve impulses from your brain to the rest of your body and vice versa, bringing reactions at the speed of a high powered luxury sports car.
2. The brain operates on the same amount of power as 10-watt light bulb. The cartoon image of a light bulb over your head when a great thought occurs isn’t too far off the mark. Your brain generates as much energy as a small light bulb even when you’re sleeping.

3. The human brain cell can hold (5) times as much information as the Encyclopedia Britannica. Or any other encyclopedia for that matter. Scientists have yet to settle on a definitive amount, but the storage capacity of the brain in electronic terms is thought to be between 3 or even 1,000 terabytes. The National Archives of Britain, containing over 900 years of history, only takes up 70 terabytes, making your brain’s memory power pretty darn impressive.
4. Your brain uses 20% of the oxygen that enters your bloodstream. The brain only makes up about 2% of our body mass, yet consumes more oxygen than any other organ in the body, making it extremely susceptible to damage related to oxygen deprivation. So breathe deep to keep your brain happy and swimming in oxygenated cells.
5. The brain is much more active at night than during the day. Logically, you would think that all the moving around, complicated calculations and tasks and general interaction we do on a daily basis during our working hours would take a lot more brain power than, say, lying in bed. Turns out, the opposite is true. When you turn off your brain turns on. Scientists don’t yet know why this is but you can thank the hard work of your brain while you sleep for all those pleasant dreams.
6. Scientists say the higher your I.Q. the more you dream. While this may be true, don’t take it as a sign you’re mentally lacking if you can’t recall your dreams. Most of us don’t remember many of our dreams and the average length of most dreams is only 2-3 seconds–barely long enough to register.
7. Neurons continue to grow throughout human life. For years scientists and doctors thought that brain and neural tissue couldn’t grow or regenerate. While it doesn’t act in the same manner as tissues in many other parts of the body, neurons can and do grow throughout your life, adding a whole new dimension to the study of the brain and the illnesses that affect it.
8. Information travels at different speeds within different types of neurons. Not all neurons are the same. There are a few different types within the body and transmission along these different kinds can be as slow as 0.5 meters/sec or as fast as 120 meters/sec.
9. The brain itself cannot feel ‘pain.’ While the brain might be the pain center when you cut your finger or burn yourself, the brain itself does not have pain receptors and cannot feel pain. That doesn’t mean your head can’t hurt. The brain is surrounded by loads of tissues, nerves and blood vessels that are plenty receptive to pain and can give you a pounding headache.
10. 80% of the brain is water. Your brain isn’t the firm, gray mass you’ve seen on TV. Living brain tissue is a squishy, pink and jelly-like organ thanks to the loads of blood and high water content of the tissue. So the next time you’re feeling dehydrated get a drink to keep your brain hydrated!!!

“Chiropractic deals with all the things that your body has to do, how you perform, how you drive, how you make a salad, how fast you can read and how well you can remember things.”

Can Chiropractic HELP Arthritis?
YES! Let’s take a look and see HOW.
There are TWO different conditions known as “arthritis”. By definition, “arthritis” is inflammation of the joints.
But, there are actually two kinds of “arthritis”. First, there’s osteoarthritis, sometimes referred to as “wear and tear” arthritis. This includes DJD or Degenerative Disc Disease. Then, there are several variations of rheumatoid arthritis.
Osteoarthritis or “wear and tear arthritis” is just that, a sort of wearing away of the joint. It typically shows up as we age OR after years of excessive use or wear on a joint.
Many people tell me “The orthopedist told me the disc in my neck or low back is worn down because of my age.”
My response is “Well, how old are the other discs in your spine?” DJD or osteoarthritis of the spine is usually caused by bones in the spine that are NOT in alignment and/or postural distortions. The discs wear away and your body tries to stabilize the area. On x-ray, this reaction looks like little bone spurs. It’s actually the body trying to fuse these vertebrae in order to protect you. Usually, the problem is not noticed until the disc is about gone and the spurs (or osteophytes) start to press on your nerves, causing pain.
The standard medical approach to “wear and tear” arthritis is self-medication with over-the-counter painkillers and NSAIDS, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Tylenol, Advil, etc. If not resolved, you can end up on steroids or prescription painkillers that can lead to addiction.
The eventual medical solution is surgery, sometimes very risky surgery with long-term consequences. The other type of arthritis, called rheumatoid arthritis, is an inflammatory autoimmune condition that causes pain, swelling and disfiguration, usually easily seen in the hands. As with most autoimmune conditions, the cause is unknown.
Yet, treatments start with over-the-counter painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs, then prescription painkillers, then immunosuppressant drugs. The mandatory warnings on these drugs warn you of infection, disease and even death.
There are many ways chiropractic helps those with arthritis. If you do indeed have spinal misalignments referred to as subluxations, this can cause the discs to wear down more quickly.

As a chiropractor I am trained to detect and correct those mis-alignments with gentle, specific adjustments. As your body stays in its proper alignment, not only is the pressure taken off the nerves, but the proper motion between the spinal bones is restored. This reduces your body’s need to lay down new bone to stabilize your spine. When that happens, your symptoms are reduced and your quality of life improves. If you maintain that proper alignment, you become stronger and help keep them from coming back.
The other way chiropractic helps is neurologically. Anyone that has ever suffered from an autoimmune disease knows that it’s made worse by stress. Chiropractic adjustments help take stress off your nervous system allowing your body to rest, relax and heal. By taking stress off your nervous system, your body functions better. When your body is restored to proper function, healing and health happens naturally. Here’s what I think about STRESS.

Do You Want Help With Stress?

There are two principles that uniquely bind chiropractic and stress management care.

The first is the principle of MOVEMENT. In stress management care, it is imperative for the patient to realize that most emotional issues cannot be fully resolved in one day. Life is a process and revelations about one's life occur over a period of time. Thus, stress management strategies are directed at providing for positive emotional movement in resolving our issues.

Chiropractic is founded on the premise that the body heals itself. It can do so when the nervous system is FREE from any interference in nerve transmission to the body.

When there is loss of proper bodily motion, muscles lose their natural tone causing nerves to become irritated. Therefore, full range of motion of the musculo-skeletal system is essential to nervous system integrity. Chiropractic manipulation is directed toward increasing range of motion and decreasing muscular restrictions.

The second principle relating chiropractic and stress management is the phenomenon of REFLEXES. A reflex occurs when one body system is unbalanced and causes another system to function improperly. It is well accepted that our mental/emotional condition affects our physical state.

Perhaps the best known reaction of the body to emotional stress is the neck muscle tension and headache occasioned by emotional stress. This mechanism is known as a psychosomatic (muscle) reflex. A similar mechanism occurs when emotional stress causes a stomach ulcer. This is a psychovisceral (organ) reflex. Get checked today!!!!

We care about you and your loved ones and we don’t want to forget anyone, including the little ones. If you have a friend or family member that is currently “not” under our care, please give them this certificate or a copy of it and have them bring it with them to their first visit. It’s FREE.
They are NO HIDDEN CHARGES, NO OBLIGATIONS and the purpose of this evaluation is to determine if they are a true chiropractic candidate. As always, there are NO guarantees I can help them, but if I can, I want that chance. There is nothing more important than your health. If you need additional copies of this certificate, please call the office and we’ll send them to you-FIRST CLASS, or through your email. Just call and give us your email address. It’s that simple! You, your family members and friends are always a top priority with us.
